Township soon ready with auto-plant application

Edwardsburgh/Cardinal is putting the final touches on its application to become the potential site of a new auto plant.

Mayor Pat Sayeau said his township will have its submission ready before the March 31 deadline of a provincial government competition that asks municipalities to nominate land suitable for a new factory.

Last spring, the provincial government announced its “Job Site Challenge,” saying it is in the hunt for 500- to 1,500-acre sites that would be suitable for the auto industry.

Automakers face a shortage of large-scale industrial sites in the built-up parts of Ontario where the industry is now concentrated so it was reaching out to municipalities in other parts of the province, the government said.
