Counties Council Highlights – June 2026

Here are the highlights from our June 25, 2026, meeting of Counties Council.

 

Healthcare & Physician Recruitment

Council received a presentation from Health Workforce Innovations Inc. on physician recruitment in Leeds and Grenville. The presentation focused on strategies to attract and retain doctors, helping to address local healthcare needs and improve access to medical services for residents.

 

Community Support & Long-Term Care

Council approved a request from Sherwood Park Manor to accelerate a $150,000 capital fundraising commitment. This funding will support ongoing improvements and future planning at the long-term care home.

 

Council Compensation & Policy Updates

Council approved updates to compensation and policies for elected officials, effective January 1, 2027, including:

  • Annual cost-of-living increases for Council members and the Warden
  • An additional one-time 10% increase in 2027
  • Annual review of conference meal per diem rates to align with national standards
  • An increase to the electronic device allowance from $800 to $1,200 per term

These changes ensure compensation and supports remain current and consistent with broader public sector practices.

 

Public Works & Infrastructure

Council approved several items related to infrastructure, safety, and property management:

  • County Road 14 rehabilitation, continuing efforts to maintain and improve road safety and driving conditions
  • Agreements with CN Rail to upgrade warning systems at two rail crossings in the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands, helping enhance safety for drivers and pedestrians
  • The sale of surplus County-owned land in Elizabethtown-Kitley, returning the property to private ownership

 

County Services & Operations

Council approved several items to support County operations and services:

  • The annual municipal insurance program, ensuring continued coverage for County operations
  • An audio-visual upgrade in Council Chambers, improving accessibility and meeting technology
