Green Initiatives
Rideau Environmental Action League (REAL)
The Rideau Environmental Action League (REAL) conducts community-wide environmental projects and promotes environmental improvements within Leeds and Grenville, Lanark and the Town of Smiths Falls.
REAL was incorporated as a not-for-profit community organization in 1989. It formed its charity, the Rideau Environment Trust, in 1990. In 1998, REAL formed the Lanark & Leeds Green Community (LL Green) and in 2000 Evergreen Avenue, as projects of REAL. LL Green engages homeowners in specific actions to reduce their impact on energy use, water, shorelines and land. Evergreen Avenue is both a living memorial to veterans and peacekeepers from the area and a community beautification project that features native vegetation.
REAL works with its volunteers, members, donors, friends and supporters, and with schools, municipalities, agencies, businesses, and government ministries to achieve its Mission and Goals. For more information visit www.realaction.ca
Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve
One of 15 biosphere reserves located in Canada, the Frontenac Arch Biosphere was designated by UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Programme in 2002. There are 564 world biosphere reserves in the world in 109 countries.
The Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve extends roughly 2,700 square kilometres in the south eastern portion of the Province of Ontario. It accomplishes its work by networking natural and historic conservation organizations, economic and social development groups, as well as the educational and scientific communities located within the Frontenac Arch region. Locally, this is known as the Biosphere Network. Collectively, the Biosphere Network helps guide the community towards a more sustainable approach to living on earth.

The Leeds Grenville Land Stewardship Council
The Leeds Grenville Stewardship Council (LGSC) is one of 46 Councils originally established and funded through the Ontario Stewardship Program. Since April 2013 OMNR no longer directly support Councils, but many, including LGSC have made a commitment to continue their important work.
The stewardship work in the United Counties is supported and encouraged by many partners, in particular the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) and the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, who provide administrative and financial support, respectively.
The Council is a unique program in which a volunteer, community-based group works on environmental enhancement projects. It is a credible forum and resource for the many community-based stewardship/ environmental groups in our community and works extensively with the partners to deliver projects.
