Limerick Forest and FSC Certification |
The forests owned and managed by the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville(Limerick Forest) have achieved Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certification (FSC® C018800) through the Eastern Ontario Model Forest’s Forest Certification Program. FSC® is an international, membership-based, non-profit organization that supports environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests. Is Overnight Camping Permitted in Limerick Forest? |
Overnight camping is not permitted in Limerick Forest. Please contact the Forest Manager at 613-342-3840, ext. 2416 or by Email if you have any questions. |
Is Limerick Forest "Crown Land"? |
No. Limerick Forest is private property owned and managed by the United Counties of Leeds & Grenville. Although it was once managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) under the Agreement Forest Program, it has always been a County asset. |
Is hunting permitted in Limerick Forest? |
Yes. Hunting is permitted in Limerick Forest as per all municipal, provincial and federal legislative requirements. However, permanent tree stands or other structures are not permitted in the forest. Information regarding specific hunting seasons and other regulations may be obtained at the local Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) office in Kemptville or on the MNRF website. Please note that hunting is not allowed in the vicinity of the Limerick Forest Interpretive Centre (a map of this non-hunting zone is posted on the Limerick web site) and “No Hunting” signs are posted on trees in the immediate vicinity of the block. Additionally, target shooting of any kind is not permitted in Limerick, especially in the gravel pit located on Forsythe Rd. |
Are Off-Road Vehicles (ORV 's) permitted in Limerick Forest? |
Yes. However, if you wish to ride an ATV or motorcycle in Limerick Forest you must belong to the Ontario Federation of All Terrain Vehicle Clubs (OFATV) and/or the Ontario Federation of Trail Riders (OFTR) and one of its local clubs, i.e., the Johnstown ATV Club or the Bytown Motorcycle Association. Further details can be found on the Motorized Vehicle Agreement page. Additionally, use of Off-Road Vehicles (ORV’s) in Limerick Forest is permitted providing all legal requirements are adhered to. In Ontario, use of all ORV’s, including off-road motorcycles/dirt bikes and All Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s) is governed by the Off-Road Vehicle Act and the Highway Traffic Act. These acts apply to off-road vehicle users and detail registration, licensing, insurance, road access and safety requirements. Additional information is available on the Ministry of Transportation web site and also in the various Drivers Handbooks available at local Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing offices. Trail maps posted on the trailhead kiosks and available on this site illustrate suitable trails for all user groups. Off-road motorcycling is a popular recreational activity in Limerick Forest. Members of the Bytown Motorcycle Association (BMA) have participated on various Limerick Forest volunteer committees in the past and have played a major role in the development and maintenance of the trail network throughout Limerick Forest. A valuable website for any off-road motorcyclist in Ontario is that of the Ontario Federation of Trail Riders. Two useful web sites for ATV-users in eastern Ontario include the Ontario Federation of All Terrain Vehicle Clubs and the Johnstown ATV Club (JATV). Both the BMA and the JATV Club now participate in the management and maintenance of the trails in Limerick as per the recently signed “Motorized Agreement” which stipulates that anyone wishing to ride an ATV or motorcycle in Limerick must belong to a local club or its provincial parent organization. |
Can I drive my ATV on the township roads? |
The use of ATV’s on “township” roads is governed by municipal by-laws specific to each township. Riding ATV’s on a township road is not permitted unless a township-level by-law has been approved specifically allowing the use of ATV’s on their roads. You should contact the municipal office for the township in question. |
Can I drive my snowmobile in Limerick Forest? |
Yes. The use of snowmobiles in Limerick Forest is permitted and the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act should be referenced for specific rules and regulations regarding the use of snowmobiles in the province. Both the Grenville Snowmobile Association and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs have very useful web sites which should be consulted for information regarding snowmobiling in this area. |
Can I ride my ATV or dirt bike on the Chalet Loop and/or other trails located behind the Limerick Forest Interpretive Centre? |
No. The trails behind the interpretive centre are designed for passive use, i.e., hikers, dog-walkers, bird-watchers, children, etc. Use of a vehicle to transport someone with mobility challenges to one of the accessible trails and boardwalks is however permitted. Please follow the instructions as indicated on the blue and white accessible signs located around the property as well as those found on the trailhead kiosk located in the interpretive centre parking lot. |
Can I ride my horse in Limerick Forest? |
Yes. With the exception of the hiking trails surrounding the Limerick Forest Interpretive Centre. Those trails were designed and built for hikers and contain a number of narrow wooden footbridges crossing small streams and as such are not safe for a horse to cross. Numerous horseback riders now make use of the many trails located in Limerick Forest. Please note however that as Limerick Forest is a multi-use forest, horseback riders may encounter other trail users some of whom may be motorized. |
What Activities Are Not Permitted Within Limerick Forest? |
