Leeds Grenville Accessibility Advisory Committee Hosts Successful First Workshop - Building Accessibility – It’s Easier Than You Think!
BROCKVILLE ON – The Leeds Grenville Accessibility Advisory Committee hosted a successful first workshop, entitled “Building Accessibility – It’s Easier Than You Think!” Friday, October 3rd. The event, designed to provide information on making homes and businesses accessible to people with disabilities, featured speakers from across Leeds and Grenville.
Speakers at the event included representatives from the building community, such as Amsted Design-Build, and speakers with lived experience with disabilities. The Accessibility Advisory Committee from the United Counties, the Municipality of North Grenville, Township of Rideau Lakes and the City of Brockville spoke, updating the participants on what the Committees have been up to. Speakers represented Community Involvement Legacy Homes, Developmental Services of Leeds and Grenville, and the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, as well as Brockville Home Health Care.
The event was hosted by Leeds Grenville Accessibility Advisory Committee Chair Rob Wright, who said “I felt the event was a success. The active participation by attendees and valuable knowledge gained from the speakers, highlights the need for action in making buildings accessible.”
Presentations touched on lived experience updating a 200-Year-Old Stone House, how to create accessible spaces using Universal Design, the importance of inclusivity, the process of creating secondary dwellings that support accessibility, and information on the accessible units that make up part of the United Counties’ Community Housing stock.
The event brought out exhibitors from the accessibility community who showcased their products and services. Exhibitors included Amsted Design-Build, Developmental Services of Leeds and Grenville, TFH Canada Special Needs Toys, Brockville Home Health Care, and the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville Affordable Housing Department.
