Counties Council Highlights - May 2026
Here are the highlights from our May 21, 2026, meeting of Counties Council.
Warden’s Remarks
At the start of the meeting, the Warden shared several acknowledgements and messages of appreciation:
- Retirement Recognition – Glenda Robinson
Council recognized Glenda Robinson on her retirement after 27 years of service with the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. Throughout her career in Community and Social Services, she served as both a Case Manager and Family Support Worker, earning appreciation for her professionalism, strong work ethic, and dedication to helping others. Council thanked her for her contributions and wished her well in retirement.
- Recognition of Therapy Dog Max
As part of Paramedic Services Week, the Warden also honoured Max, a paramedic therapy dog who served with Ottawa Paramedic Service before joining Leeds and Grenville Paramedic Service in 2023. Alongside his handler, Max provided comfort and support to paramedics and staff. Council expressed its gratitude for his service and recognized the positive impact he made. - Recognition of Counties’ Staff
The Warden acknowledged the contributions of paramedics, in recognition of Paramedic Services Week, and Public Works staff, in recognition of National Public Works Week, thanking them for their ongoing service to residents.
Economic Development & Business Support
Council received reports focused on strengthening the local economy and workforce, including:
- A report on a small business transfer payment agreement, supporting local business initiatives. This report was delivered to enter into an Ontario Transfer Payment Agreement (TPA) with the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade (MEDJCT) for the Leeds Grenville Small Business Enterprise Centre (SBEC) Program comprised of the Small Business Enterprise Centre Core, Starter Company Plus and Summer Company programs. The MEDJCT funds 54 SBECs that provide entrepreneurs with tools they need to start and grow their businesses.
- A report on regional economic development through immigration, outlining how immigration can help address labour shortages and support long‑term economic growth in Leeds and Grenville.
Public Works & Infrastructure
Council approved an item related to maintaining Counties’ infrastructure:
- The purchase of two agricultural tractors to be used for roadside mowing, supporting regular road maintenance and public safety.
Advocacy & Intergovernmental Relations
Council reviewed proposed advocacy priorities, including:
- A report outlining items for delegation to the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), identifying issues the Counties may raise with provincial representatives.
Committee Reports & Community Issues
Council received reports and considered resolutions from its committees and on broader community matters:
- Reports from the Committee of the Whole, Maple View Lodge Committee of Management, and the Corporate Services and Finance Committee, providing updates and recommendations on Counties’ operations.
- A draft resolution supporting the Municipal Engineers’ Association’s position on proposed changes to municipal road construction standards.
- A draft resolution addressing food insecurity in Leeds and Grenville, highlighting the importance of access to affordable and nutritious food for residents.
