Quality of Life

The entire region boasts a high quality of life and has earned the World Health Organization's Safe Communities designation. The City of Brockville was the first city in Ontario, second in Canada and fourth in North America to join the Safe Communities Coalition.

Now called the Safe Community Coalition of Brockville, Leeds and Grenville to include the entire Counties region, its goal is to promote a community culture of safety and well being. There are 80 community groups that have partnered with the coalition. Local safety programs earned near-perfect scores during a Safe Communities Canada study in 2008. Visit the Safe Communities Coalition website for more information.

Leeds Grenville offers a quality of life experience that is sought after by many. Our rich heritage and recreational assets have been captured for future generations to enjoy. There is a unique blend of cultural offerings and vibrant communities that attract visitors from around the world. Our iconic tourism assets provide the vista for boating, fishing, water sports, theatre, tours of historic mansions, castles and military fortresses, cycling, antiquing, and much more.

Leeds Grenville offers a broad cross section of leisure, sporting and recreational activities, not to mention countless festivals and special events throughout the year from North Grenville, Merrickville and the Rideau River Waterway in the north to its cottage country on lakes in the central part of the region, including Charleston Lake, to the world-famous 1000 Islands River and its many attractions and diversions in the south.  This is an area where you can start a business and vacation in the same spot.

The St. Lawrence River is a diving enthusiast's paradise with steel freighters, historical shipwrecks and much more on its riverbed. The area carries the nickname 'Caribbean North' for its fresh water scuba diving.

The region is considered one of the safest places in the world to learn, work and play. It is also known for its volunteerism and philanthropy. Even in tough economic times, the community gives support to a number of charitable organizations, which in turn ensure a higher quality of life for all.

Canada overall has ranked well in recent surveys for a country having a good quality of life. In the 2016 HSBC Expat Explorer Survey, Canada was ranked third overall in the Overall Experience category and fifth overall in the Family category, including first for tolerance, ninth in quality of life, second in health and fourth in integration. Large numbers of expats reported they are fitter, smarter and happier in Canada, according to the report.
